Welcome to the Terrordome was as a single before the album, and very much set the mood, both of the sound and content, for "Fear of a Black Planet".

In 2007 Pharoahe Monch would release his long awaited sophomore solo effort. Monch was already an established and well respected lyricist. It probably took many by surprises to hear him reprise the first verse of a then 18 year old song verbatim.

Monch, however, contextualize the cover with a far from subtle spoken intro. The second verse, while true to the mood, diverges fully from the lyric and rhyme patterns of the original.

'Mu & Metro saved this gem for the hard core heads. Only the Vinyl single buyers got this little gem (and the solid b side Niggales Cage).

Illy was a stand out track on the album, in no small part because of the rich production of the remix. The thumping, throbbing, warmth of the beat invites the listener to nod their head and enjoy. The original Camu Tao production is much more somber and simple.

As colorful and fun as the album version is, after listening to the composition in its original form, its hard to hear the chorus seemingly being framed as celebration of success rather than a lament.

The mood and music of the original is clearly more fitting (as it almost certainly was the inspiration) for the lyrics. Just look how Metro starts of the song:

"I write to melancholy rhythms with the colors of pain,

with a chemical imbalance that could smother your brain."

The well crafted and poignant lyrics are complimented well by both beats.

The album mix is busier and more chaotic, perhaps intending to reflect the hard edge of the song.

While the original version is some what more simply produced, leaving the lyrics bare. The original is striking to me for the power of its melodic austerity.

In 1990, a few months before the release of the seminal classic Breaking Atoms, The Main Source released perhaps the first 'emo rap'. No Atmosphere, over here, but this song about struggling with his chick helped establish the Large Professor, and the rest of Main Source. In fact, "Looking at the Front Door" hit No.1 on the Hip Hop charts.

About 8 years later, the hip hop duo Heltah Skeltah, would release there sophomore effort Magnum Force. Track 6 is this obvious homage to the Main Source classic. Sean Price goes for dolo on this one, and rips a heartfelt classic with out getting too mushy.

I guess thats the true strength of the original as well. You can clearly hear and feel the pain and heartache being expressed, but at the same time you don't feel like you are listen to some whiny bitch moping in you ear.
